What is eardrum perforation (tympanoplasty) surgery?
This procedure involves closing the hole in the eardrum with a patch taken from the patient's own tissue (usually the muscle sheath behind the ear). This surgery protects the ear from infection and aims to improve hearing.
No. Hearing may be more subtle initially, depending on the post-operative middle ear dressings and the healing process. A clear improvement in hearing usually becomes noticeable after a few weeks, as the tissues heal.
The most important rule is to avoid water in the ear for the period prescribed by your doctor. Additionally, avoid heavy lifting, straining, and blowing your nose for a period of time.
Like all surgical procedures, ear surgery carries risks, but they are quite low. When performed by an experienced surgeon, the risks of dizziness, infection, or hearing loss are minimal.
